By the end of this year, close to 600,000 women will die during childbirth in Nepal. Almost half of Nepal’s children under five years of age will be permanently scarred by malnutrition and thousands of HIV/AIDS affected children will go entirely without primary school education.
The reality for more than half of Nepal’s population is bleak but it is not without hope
This year, the Mountain Fund implemented and sustained community-based initiatives that dramatically improved healthcare and education in Nepal’s mountain communities. 44,000 people now have access to affordable healthcare in the Rasuwa district of Nepal. And recently, the UN discovered that Nepal’s maternal mortality rate decreased from 415 to 259 deaths per 100,000 live births because of a national effort to improve women’s health.
