The flagship facility and center of our Rasuwa Program
The photograph on the upper left of this page is the Kalika Community Hospital. This is the flagship and center of our Rasuwa health care program. The property was built by ADRA in 1998 to be a regional hospital but due to political conditions and changes in ADRA’s focus it closed. Subsequently the property was given to the government health office who in turn gave it to the community. Prem Tamang, pictured on the left with Mountain Fund founder Scott MacLennan, was the driving force in the community to re-establish this property as a hospital for the poor people of the Rasuwa District. The Mountain Fund is now sponsoring one full-time doctor and a full-time nurse at this hospital. In 2009 we will install a small medical laboratory in the hospital and sponsor a lab technician as well. Our capital campaign needs of approximately $24,000 will furnish the hospital with x-ray, dental, vision and other medical equipment necessary to provide a quality level of services. Together with the clinics in the northern part of the district we are creating a network that makes access to healthcare a reality for over 44,000 people of the Rasuwa District as well as nearby villages in Dhading and Nuwakot Districts. The entire health system costs less than $1.00 per person per year to
operate. It’s a wonderful example as well of cooperation and collaboration. The network is comprised of local villages who donated buildings, the government of Nepal who we are partnered with to place staff in existing health outposts and local NGO’s who help us manage the entire program to keep overhead costs really low. It’s a labor of love for all involved.
